Perches

The types of perches that stores have would be those dowel perches

They’re bad for your bird’s feet because they’re smooth all the way around. Because it doesn’t have any variation in it, your bird’s feet will develop pressure points, which ultimately causes bumblefoot. If it is left untreated, it can cause your little fluffy friend to die 🙁 To clear things up though, you can still have these in their cage but you can use a knife and scrape it to make it uneven. There should also be other types of perches such as…

  1. Flat perches

Bird’s feet are often curved around the perches, so having a flat perch can let them rest. These can be placed in a corner of your bird’s cage.

2. Rope perches

⚠️Warning⚠️: if you see your bird chewing on the strings/rope, making it frizzy, take it out.

If your bird is just standing on it, you can keep it in there because the spiral pattern isn’t smooth and a softer perch is different from other types of perches.

3. Natural wood perches

Wild birds always stand on these and no natural wood perch is smooth, unlike dowel perches. Just make sure to use safe types (search them up) and disinfect them.

This isn’t a perch, but some stores will sell happy huts. These are bad because your bird may get tangled in it or swallow the fibers.

Sand perches are also bad for your bird because even though their initial purpose is to trim your bird’s nails, the roughness can irritate their feet.
